My Practice Philosophy at Family Wellness Center has always focused on treating and caring for the PERSON who has a disease, or condition, rather than treating the disease that person has. I have been a Traditional Medicine Physician as well as an Integrative Medical Physician for many years, who tries to improve the person’s “Terrain” and support their immune system, to allow for an enhanced reversal of many medical conditions. While utilizing appropriate combined nutritional support, reduction and removal of environmental toxins, improvement in patient’s abilities to oxygenate and structure vs. function relationships by incorporating osteopathic manipulative therapies if needed, the “road to healthy longevity” is achieved with greater ease. With a smaller practice, I can focus more on quality preventive medicine care, and life enhancement. We offer hyperbaric oxygen therapies, intravenous nutritional support, natural thyroid and hormone replacement therapies and osteopathic manipulative therapies among many other modalities to holistically help people achieve quality longevity.

Dr. Scott Doughty is the start-up inspiration of UP Holistic Medicine. A Family Medicine specialist, Dr. Doughty first moved to Marquette in 1992 for training at the MGH/MSU affiliated Residency. Since then, he has spent 14 of his 24 years as an MD in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, most recently teaching, as a faculty member at the residency where he first trained here in Marquette. For ten years, he was fortunate to work with the Indian Health Service in Zuni, New Mexico. There, his patients were largely Zuni and Navajo, and for most of that time, he directed the hospital’s Diabetes Program. For his entire career, Dr. Doughty has prioritized connecting with his patients, and over the past 7 years, expanding his interest and skills in integrative and functional medicine. In that time, he has found more joy, excitement, and success in caring for patients than at any other time in his career. His wife, Amy, a certified nurse-midwife, is currently working full-time as homeschool teacher with their daughters, Brooke, Maren, and Raina. Amy is studying herbal medicine for women’s health with Dr. Aviva Jill Romm, and will join the UPHM staff in the near future.

My vision of becoming a medical doctor started in my teen years after observing the life- long debilitating effects of diabetes in my father. I was a conventionally trained MD. I attended the best schools and residencies. I thought I could heal and save everyone. But I, too, succumbed to the ravages of stress and burnout. After 5 moves in 10 years, 4 children and marriage to an orthopedic surgeon, my genetic history reared itself to the point of illness and I “hit the wall”. It took several personal and medical struggles to realize that conventional medicine is content treating symptoms of illness with medications to prevent the known circumstances identified with that “name of the disease”. I saw stress as the promoter of dysfunction in over 80% of the patients I was seeing. We all have choices. I am using my medical training and experience to offer a continuum for health. Empowering oneself with choices for symptom management which include proper nutrition, sleep, hormone balance and connected mind promotes overall wellness, not disease management. For those interested in credentials, I am board certified with over 30+ years experience in many fields.
